A Green call for Peace

Here’s another hideous act of America in the wrong place. We just gave the Taliban, an extremely repressive regime, $43 million dollars because they promised to stop producing poppies for heroin. Yes, we are supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan. (More information)

If bombs and guns are not the answer what is? I have heard a few responses from Greens on this, but not many. One suggestion is that we, while the entire world is watching, demand Afghanistan to freeze the assets of Osama bin Laden and then insist on his extradition for his crimes that he has committed. Try him in court while the world watches.

How does America become a target?

I saw another program recently about Jamaican farmers struggling to survive and losing the battle against the foreign foods being imported into their country. They used to have high tariffs on imported foods, to support the local farming, and those tariffs have been removed due to the demands of the IMF and World Bank. Now the farmers have lost their market, and their livelihood. They were pleading to the camera; “America get out. We want our Jamaica back. We want our farming back.” No, it wasn’t only American products in the market, but it is our ideals.

Too many times I have seen American culture and ideals pushed upon other countries and cultures to do business our way, saying; ‘Our way, the American way, is the only right way.’ Maybe the “American way” isn’t always the right way. Perhaps we need to let off, let others live as they will. Let other cultures and economies survive how they will. If they want to be “American” they will ask us for help. Let them come to us, instead of forcing ourselves upon them. This is where we go astray. This is where we find ourselves open to danger, and possible attacks, like what happened on Tuesday.

When we think about how to respond to the terrorism that has fallen on America, we need to be thoughtful and not emotional. We cannot afford to be quick to judge without thinking clearly. Acting out in haste out of anger and strong emotions doesn’t resolve these situations, and won’t prevent any future attacks. This isn’t the first attack against America, only the worst and most devastating. Don’t we want to prevent any future tragedies, without giving up our freedom?

Here’s something else to consider. Right
