Commit to Earth!

Earth Day is here: Sunday, April 22. What are you doing on Earth day?

Let’s make Earth Day not only a day to reflect on the environment, and become aware of the environment, but also use this day to make a pledge to the environment. Let’s make Earth Day a little like New Year’s Day when you make a commitment to yourself to change some bad habit, such as quitting smoking, or start a good habit, like getting exercise three times a week. On Earth Day we should all make a small commitment to the Earth, such as, I will start to recycle my trash, or I will take cloth bags with me to the store. If you want to do something more, how about, I will go each month and help clean up the beach, or plant a tree.

If you’re someone who already does a few good things for the earth, your commitment could be, I will help teach others about what they can do to help the earth. Or maybe your commitment will be adding solar panels to your house to reduce the amount of energy you pull from the grid. Hey we all need a little more energy right now. Or perhaps you will start to write letters to your representatives urging them to consider how the environment does matter. Or maybe your commitment is joining an environmental group, becoming more involved.

Start with one thing. Do it all year, until it becomes second nature. When I first started taking cloth bags to the store, I forgot a lot of the times. That was okay. Now I nearly never forget. When you start to recycle your trash it takes some time to learn how to do it smart and efficiently. I found a great recycling place that will take nearly everything, even though my city has curbside recycling. I found this recycling center takes a lot more items than the city recycling does. I buy smarter too. I look at the container or package a product comes in to see if I can recycle it. If I can’t, like a #6 plastic, and there’s another brand with packaging I can recycle, I buy that one instead.

There are some good books out there that can help you in your search for what to do. Here’s a few with links to Amazon to buy them:
