LESS IS MORE

of every other thing. This is an extreme form of simplicity and few can attain it. Your essentials should include: food, cooking and eating utensils, a roof over your head, adequate heating, only enough clothes to give yourself adequate changes, sufficient money, sufficient tools to maintain your simple lifestyle and earn the money you need, enough items to keep yourself clean, a source of bathing water plus everything you have identified in Task Two.

The most basic simplification of your life should at least involve getting rid of the things that you hate, the junk that is cluttering up your life and the rubbish that accumulate in drawers and cupboards. This is easier than any other form of simplicity and should not be beyond even the most avid hoarder.

Those who can go a little further need to look at the object that they neither love nor hate. The more of these that are thinned out, the simpler a lifestyle you will accomplish. Don't rush at it with moral zeal. This needs to be a slow, organic progress. A slow, winding pathway from absolute chaos to a sensible degree of simplicity that you feel comfortable with.

One thing that you will find in doing this is that each item you manage to get rid of lifts a little weight from your shoulders. After a while objects start to own you, they grab at your attention, make demands of you, fill you with guilt if you ignore them. The smaller the number of these object that you allow to belong to you, the less energy you will use in maintaining them.

Let me know how you get on with this. There is a discussion section after this article. Tell me some of your favourite things, what was easy to get rid of, how you felt with less objects demanding your attention.
