  • Buy a tiny Christmas cake and cut it up into minute slivvers. Most people find Christmas cake extremely rich and only want a little. Trying to foist wedges of Christmas cake on them as they return home is not the best way to maintain Christmas harmony.
  • The main Christmas meal is likely to be far heavier than most people eat. Therefore make breakfast and your other meal light.
  • Give people a chance to digest a meal before offering them snacks. A rule of thumb would be not to offer snack either up to an hour before or after a meal.
  • Remember that certain snacks are also very filling. Peanuts for instance would not be a good snack to offer prior to the main meal, though it might be welcome after a light salad.
  • It is kind to offer non-fattening as well as fattening snacks. Some people have more of a problem with weight then others. Some nice alternatives to the stodge are: fruit of all sorts, crudites with a low fat dip or virtually fat-free biscuits.
  • Many people mistake thirst for hunger. It is therefore sensible to offer regular drinks throughout the day. This also prevents your guests from becoming dehydrated and irritable, see below.
  • If you want a peaceful celebration, make sure half the drinks you offer contain neither alcohol or caffeine. Dehydration, alcohol and caffeine all contribute to the family feud at Christmas and since alcohol also contributes to dehydration, it is twice as likely to cause problems.

People are seldom likely to refuse food offered to them, particularly if they are guests in your home. The consequences of this politeness are often not pleasant. They can range from pounds of excess weight to excrusiating indigestion. Christmas is also a bumper time for digestive remedies. With a little thought, Christmas can be a time of family togetherness that does not have to be paid for by dietary penance in the New Year.

My SIXTH Rule of Christmas is:

Only the turkey should be stuffed
