Linux Week - SeaMonkey

A very happy new year to everyone. First of all, I have to apologize for the lapse in articles the last few months. We've been seeing some rough times, but everything is finially sorted out. II thought this new year, we could start with a month's feature.

This January, I'll be featuring Linux software as reviewed by SoftSeek. They're a very well-known group in the Windows software department. They host reviews and downloads of shareware, freeware and trials of all the latest iin Windows and Linux software.

Starting the year is Mozilla's latest open-source browser for the internet. Code-named Seamonkey (sinister sinister!!!), this version (0.7 beta) boasts hiigh-end browsing performance and many tweaks and improvements over the last few flavors.

As Softseek puts it, Mozilla for Linux (Seamonkey) is an open-source Web browser designed for standards compliance, performance, and portability. The Seamonkey project is the organized effort to ship the first commercial release of the browser as well as the e-mail and page composer clients from the Mozilla source code baseline.

The Seamonkey project is organized around several milestones. Each release adds additional infrastructure, features, and bug fixes. The milestones are intended to be periodic check points of the project's progress, stability of builds, and porting status, as well as entry points for additional Mozilla contributors to provide testing and engineering help on the project.

The whole beauty of the open-end system comes through in this package. The downside may be the intimidatiing 10.3 Mb, 53 minute download at 28.8 kbps. Yup, it does take a while. System requirements are ...well ...Linux! The GNU, general public license apples to licensing. For more information about GNU, click here.

All in all, the browser is fast, reliable and can be modified through the open source. It's definitely worth a check-out. For more information you can visit the Mozilla site.
