Title: Cassie's Sweet Berry Pie: A Civil War Story
Cassie hasn't tasted huckleberry pie in ages. With the Civil War raging, such items as sugar, butter and flour have been rationed. Cassie's mother manages to barter some potatoes for the much needed ingredients. She gives permission for Cassie to make a pie.
Mother is tending wounded soldiers at the hospital. Papa is somewhere in Pennsylvania fighting with the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee. Cassie and her younger brother and sister are home alone.
When the son of their closest neighbor, Sam Banks, gallops into the yard to tell them the Yankees are coming, Cassie is unsure of what to do. Then, she gets an idea.
When the Yankee soldiers enter the house and find Cassie's brother and sister in bed, with red spots all over them, they are startled. What happens next will delight young readers.
Karen B. Winnick has done a delightful job with this story. You will get a glimpse into the life of children during the Civil War and realize that children can be heroes and heroines, just like adults. The oil painting illustrations will transport you back to the Civil War era, an interesting time in United States history.
