Leah and her family live on the Great Plains during the time of the Great Depression (1930's). The family farm is plagued with locusts and drought. The crops fail. The bank forecloses (taking back property for money owed) on the farm. Leah and her family will have no place to live if they lose the farm. Leah is worried.

Leah forms a plan. She sells her beloved Pony and bids one dollar on her father's tractor. Inspired by her selfless actions, others begin buying the family's belongings at cheap prices. Then, they return all they've purchased to the family.

The lovely oil painting illustrations in this book are spectacular. A great read for all those who love horses and stories of bygone days.

A long time ago, in a city by the sea, a delivery-man named Mr. Decker, owned a horse named Chestnut who helped to pull the delivery wagon all over town. People would eagerly await the early morning arrival of Mr. Decker and Chestnut, for they relied on them very much to help supply their businesses with goods. One morning, Mr. Decker falls asleep after chaining Chestnut to the delivery wagon, and loading it with goods. Now Chestnut must take matters into his own hooves, and deliver the goods before it is too late.

The story is fantastic, as are Whyte's watercolor illustrations. A must-have for all young horse lovers.

Hi Mary,

These sound very interesting - the stories and the artwork. I think some of the best art around can be found in many of the illustrations in children's books. Thank you for these wonderful ...
