The Christmas Story

© Adapted by Mary M. Alward

It came to pass that an angel appeared to the young woman, Mary, saying, "You shall bring forth (have) a son, who will be conceived by God and you shall call His name, Jesus."

Now Caesar Augustus sent out notice that everyone would be taxed. Joseph and Mary left their home in Galilee to travel to the City of David, which is Bethlehem, where they would be taxed. At the time, Mary was heavy with child (pregnant).

When Mary and Joseph reached Bethlehem, Mary knew the time had come for God's Son to be born, but there was no room for them in the Inn. Instead, the couple found shelter in a stable with the animals.

And Mary brought forth the child (had the baby). She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and lay him in a manger filled with hay. And that was His bed.

In the country, shepherds were tending their flocks by night. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone brightly. The shepherds were very afraid.

And the angel said, "Fear not: for I bring you tidings of great joy. For unto you this day in the City of David, a Saviour is born, who is Christ the Lord, and this shall be the sign. You will find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."

And suddenly there were a host of angels singing and praising God, saying, "Peace on Earth and Good Will toward Men."

And the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem, where they found Jesus lying in the manager. And they knew that the babe was the Saviour, Jesus.

And in the east there appeared a bright star to the wisemen. And they followed the star to Bethlehem, where they found the baby Jesus. And they gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

And an angel appeared to Mary and Joseph telling them that King Herrod wished to harm Jesus. They fled by night to Egypt and went home by a different way.
