It's very important for you to read lots of books on many different subjects. Why? Because books are an important part of life. Good reading skills and knowing lots about many different subjects makes life much easier as you grow. It keeps your mind active and broadens your knowledge. Books allow you to experience joy, wonder and enchantment. They help you to see the world in many different ways.

When I was a child, reading material was limited. I grew up in a rural area. There were a few books in a shelf along the school room, but there was no school library. Since I loved reading, I read every book I could get, no matter the subject. At home, I had a huge collection of Nancy Drew mysteries. I asked for these for birthdays and Christmas. Eventually, I had all fifty original books.

I traveled the world with Nancy and her friends, solving such mysteries as, the Mystery of the Tolling Bell, "The Secret in the Old Attic, and the Mystery of the Moss Covered Mansion. They were great books for girls. The Hardy Boys series were mysteries geared to boys. That didn't bother me. I read those too. Though these mysteries are advertised as teen books, kids 9 to 12 will love them.

Today, millions of books for children are available in bookstores and libraries for you to enjoy. You can travel the world and beyond between the covers of a good book. Books are our friends. They teach us many things and allow us to go places we could never go without them.

Reading helps you to have a better understanding of language and words. Read to a younger sibling (brother or sister) or a friend. Take turns reading a paragraph or chapter. This can be lots of fun and allows you and the person you read with to form a close bond.

Why not form a family reading group? Once or twice a week, take an hour, or even a half hour and take turns reading. Be sure to choose a book that everyone will enjoy. If your family has younger children, read something with them first, then read something that will interest older children and adults. I can think of hundreds of books that the whole family will enjoy. Younger children will enjoy classics such as "Saggy Baggy Elephant," "Mother Goose,"
