Adrianna and her family travel from Europe to America looking for a better life. When Adrianna's grandmother dies, the child finds herself alone with her abusive father. She has only a flute, a box of matches and her faith in God.

In order to survive, Adrianna stands on the street corner in bitter winds, snow storms and frigid temperatures trying to get a few coins for her matches. Desperate, the girl attempts to warm herself by lighting the matches. She has no desire to return home to her abusive father, and lies down in the snow. The girl falls asleep and her spirit soars skyward toward peace.

Pinkey has done a great job of modernizing this classic. Illustrator Rachel Isador's water color illustrations make this book a delight to children.

This book is awesome for children to read during the holidays or a great book to read to younger children. Who is the stranger? Why did he arrive in the woods right after a heavy snowfall? What surprises does he hold in store for the creatures who live in the forest?

All of these questions are answered to the delight of its' readers. The book encourages an interest and respect of the environment. Beautiful photography illustrations. A perfect Christmas gift.
