Desperate, the girl attempts to warm herself by lighting the matches. She has no desire to return home to her abusive father, and lies down in the snow. The girl falls asleep and her spirit soars skyward toward peace.
Pinkey has done a great job of modernizing this classic. Illustrator Rachel Isador's water color illustrations make this book a delight to children.
