How Women Came to be on the Prairie

In the beginning, Creator of All Things spread out the Prairie. It was a vast and wide-open place, seemingly stretching from sunrise to sunset. It appeared to be an empty place, but this was a deception. For here the Great Wind danced and played as it swept along, combing the grasses that covered most of the Prairie.

The Prairie gave the impression of a vast lonely place, and this too was a deception. A closer inspection, as the Great Wind combed and parted the Prairie's green tresses, gave sight to a numerous variety of Small Creatures who made their homes upon and within the Prairie.

Although Creator had done its work well still the Prairie was not complete. In time, Creator placed Great Shaggy Beasts upon the Prairie. With them Creator placed Fleet-Footed Creatures who wore graceful branches upon their heads. Creator was quite satisfied and proud of the work it had accomplished--so far. But something still was missing.

It was true that Great Wind sang a wonderful song as it danced, delighting Creator with its varied voices. But Creator knew that other songs would add additional beauty to the Prairie. It was not long after that Small Feathered Ones could be seen flitting and fluttering amongst and over the grasses of the Prairie. These delightful beings gave forth so many wonderful melodies that Creator never tired of listening throughout the long sunshiny days.

The sounds of the Feathered Ones so filled Creator with rapture that at evening time, when the Feathered Ones tucked their tiny heads beneath their wings for the night and the wind ceased its tune, that Creator became near desolate with loneliness. Throughout the long dark hours, while Great Gold Orb rose over the Prairie, Creator waited anxiously for Bright Glowing Circle to reappear in the sky, bringing light once again to the Prairie. And with this light, Creator knew, would come the beautiful and happy songs of the Feathered Ones.

One long night as Creator rested upon a Large Black Hill it watched Great Gold Orb move across the sky. And within those quiet hours Creator came to know that Great Gold Orb was lonely. The reason for Orb's loneliness was that of all of Creator's creations Great Gold Orb, alone, had no one to sing to it.

As Creator stared upward into the face of Great Gold Orb it knew what must come next. There, on the Great Black Hills, Creator placed a multitude of Sleek and Slinking Hunters whose silver and black fur rippled in the wind. And as Great Gold Orb rose over the Great Black Hills these creatures lifted their heads to Orb and from their souls rose a new song. Mournful but also beautiful, the song of the Sleek and Slinky Hunters and Singers to the Great Gold Orb filled the lonely night.
