If I Were in Charge of MetaCreations© Brendan Middleton
Oct 19, 1999
If I were in charge of MetaCreations, things would be different. Profits would be up (they were way down last year), stock prices would be soaring, and everything would be ok. If I were in charge of MetaCreations, the software company responsible for such greats as Kai's Power Tools, Bryce, and Canoma would be as popular as Macromedia and as much a household name as Adobe.
A cooler website
If I were in charge of MetaCreations, the website wouldn't be lame. We'd hire a whole slew of professional artists to build the site using our own tools - we'd have interfaces created in Bryce, buttons created in KPT 5, and Poser figures dangling from every menu. I don't know what MetaCreations was thinking when they designed their current website... is it supposed to impress us? It could be so much more unique, so much more innovative. MetaCreations' programmers are some of the best in the world - I can't even imagine the skills involved in developing Ray Dream's rendering algorithms - so why does the site have such bland, off-the-shelf JavaScripts? Where are the intuitive and magical interfaces that make Bryce and Poser so special?
Truth in advertising
If I were in charge of MetaCreations, we wouldn't claim to be something we are not - "The Creative Web Company." MetaCreations is NOT a web company - far from it. They make imaging software, some of the most innovative and revolutionary imaging software in the world - and they should be proud of that. If I were in charge of MetaCreations, we'd call ourselves "The Creative Imaging Company." Graphic companies are jumping onto the web bandwagon left and right - why? The web really doesn't have very much to do with computer graphics, believe it or not. The best artists don't work on the web, they work in Hollywood, they work in multimedia, they work in ad agencies, they work for video game developers. You're not a web company, MetaCreations - deal with it. There are enough web companies.
The new logo? It's a no go.
If I were in charge of MetaCreations, we'd go back to our old logo. The old logo was very cool - a sleek, silvery pretzel shape that was instantly identifiable, symbolic of a cool company that made great 3D graphics software. The new logo looks like... well, it looks sort of like a leaf rake, I guess. Or maybe a pitchfork. What the heck is the new logo supposed to be, anyway? And why did they italicize the company name? It kills me to say it, but I'm going to go out on a limb and speak my mind: MetaCreations, I hate your new logo.
