Feng Shui and Art Appreciation

How Feng Shui related to Graphic Art is all up to the beholder. While it is traditionally thought to be reserved for interior decorators and designers, the artistic motivations behind these practices are quite vast. Many are now experiencing this as an art form, rather than a scientific practice. It should also be mentioned that interior decorating and designing are both also forms of Graphic Art.

Feng Shui, introduced in the Chinese as early as 6000 BCE, is a very complex method where colors, numbers and science. Many sites boast teaching about the complexities of these practices, but do they really dive deep into what Feng Shui is all about? Rarely. The teachings are so involved one must invest a lot of time and effort into what should be considered a craft, rather than a method. There are necessities for precision, memorization, intuition, numerology, and symbolization. However, what has just been listed barely scratches the surface.

What can best be done by those interested is, rather than spend countless hours perfecting these skills, is to develop an appreciation for this art form. An appreciation still requires a thorough knowledge, but not as much as the practice itself does. Not many can do justice for such a complex system of seeking out troubled areas in the living and working areas of our lives, but a successful effort is often made.

It should not be misunderstood that the practice of Feng Shui should not be learned or practiced. On the contrary, the point being made is if you do not have to time to commit to such extensive study, it is best not to try to breeze through with your eyes closed. This would be like a flight instructor leaving once they know you are able to take off. What about the landing? The same goes for Feng Shui, you should not take off without the ability to land.

That’s where the ability to appreciate comes in. Art appreciation is practiced on many levels from admiring a famous painting to marveling over a fantastic sculpture. There are no rules, just learning as you go. Who can have an intellectual conversation about the Pieta if they don’t know the history? No one. This is also true about Feng Shui. Learn all you can focusing about what you love first, then dive into the more complicated aspects.

Learning the pronunciation should be lesson one. Nothing is more irritating than listening to someone who thinks they know all about the medieval Chinese origination, then cannot pronounce the term correctly. The most common way to pronounce Feng Shui is, phonetically, FUNG-SHWAY. It is also common to see it as one word, fengshui.
