Thomas Kinkade: Luminist Painter

© Jennifer Hollowell

Both artists and admirers alike collect Thomas Kinkade’s work. His Christian expressionism shines through each piece with a radiant glow, hence the reference:

“Painter of Light.”

More often than not, his work is based upon personal experiences. He is America’s most collected living artist by millions each year.

His work can be found just about everywhere on just about anything:

  • Bible covers
  • books
  • figurines
  • calendars
  • planners
  • blankets
  • lithographs
  • magnets
  • mouse pads
  • wallpaper borders
  • screen savers . . and the list goes on . . !
  • His family always supported his early work. Kinkade’s mother would often hang framed pieces of his finished works around the house as decoration. His interests for oil painting developed early at age six and his talents were apparent by the time he reached sixteen years of age, when he became apprentice to painter Glen Wessels. His education includes attendance at the University of California at Berkley and The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Often referred to as a Luminist painter (an artist who used the effects of light), Kinkade’s paintings warm any environment which they hang with their soft edges and light tones. The “Kinkade Glow” is often used when someone is trying to describe his magical manipulation of light. This devout Christian credits all his talents and abilities to the Lord. He recently published a book called “Simpler Times” containing his illustrations and his philosophies about faith and family.

As a left-handed artist (I had to throw this part in because I am also left-handed.), he was born 1958 in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains in California. He married his sweetheart, Nanette, in 1982 and they had four daughters together: Merrit, Chandler, Winsor and Everett. It was not until after his marriage that he began to seriously publish his works. His rigorous six-day painting schedule keeps him busy, yet he still finds time for church, reading and traveling extensively. Further, he also finds time to create prints for charitable cases.

I first learned of this artist while window shopping at my favorite Christian bookstore. Ever since I was first introduced, I have been hooked to his magical paintings. While it is most common to find his work provided in such environments as the one that I was visiting, it is not limited to that type of location. Especially during the holidays, his work is spread thickly throughout secular sellers as well.

light to the world, doesn't he? I noticed him first in a gift shop, then suddenly all over. He really has a following. Plus he seems like an all-around neat guy.
