Jennifer Landry: College Artist

This week’s focus is being placed upon the artist, Jennifer Landry. This college student, whom was born and brought up in the state of Maine, was kind enough to take time out to answer a few questions and share her work. She and I have been corresponding since September and it has been a pleasurable learning experience all the while. I am including a sample of her work next to each of her responses. I apologize for the size limitations we are faced with at this site, I hope you all can see them well enough!

Enjoy!

JENNIFER HOLLOWELL: HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ART AND BEING AN ARTIST?

JENNIFER LNDRY: I guess it all started with a course in photography in High school. I started with one, and that lead to another, and then from there I decided not to go into the air force, and go to art school..This didn’t go over so well... But I went off to art school, and found two mediums that I loved. Sculpture, and Graphic design.

JENNIFER HOLLOWELL: WHO ARE/WERE YOUR ARTISTIC ROLE MODELS?

JENNIFER LNDRY: Artistic Role Models? Well I guess its more of a style. I have this strange attraction to cold machinelike objects. I work a lot with metal, I have made many sculptures with steel, and focused a lot of my work on the mechanicalness of our interactions with others, and ourselves in instances. So I guess the works of Aleksander Rochenko, Piet Zwart, John Hartfield, Varvara Stepanova, Herbert Bayer, but you can never list all of your inspirations. We are all inpsired by so many things from traffic to fine art it’s hard to list them all. I have an obsession with books both making them, and reading them. The invention of Boarders aka the public library is a great part of the source of my inspriation. In high school I was playing with combining my writing with my photography. Horribly written works, and I am oh sooo glad they did not survive the trip along with me.

JENNIFER HOLLOWELL: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH THIS MEDIUM?

JENNIFER LNDRY: I have been in design for 5 years, not until this year did I start combining sculpture with my design work.

JENNIFER HOLLOWELL: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AN ARTIST JUST ENTERING INTO COLLEGE?

JENNIFER LNDRY: God, advice? Don’t sleep.....ever. Not really, just be careful with taking extra money out. Oh I’ll take a little extra out for supplies, that really hits you later, and with interest. Figuring out how much each class is costing you helps deter one from skipping a class.
