What is Graphic Art?

© Jenn Greenleaf

Pick up your favorite book. Now, look at both the front and the back of the cover. This is an example of graphic art. Pick up a box of your favorite cereal. Examine the outside of the box, rather than diving straight into the contents. Again, this is a form of graphic art.

Do you have wallpaper adorning your walls? If so, who do you think designed the print? A graphic artist. Do you have oriental throw rugs covering your floors or have you admired them at your favorite retail store? Ever wonder who designed them? You guessed it, a graphic artist.

The point I am trying to illustrate with the questions above it graphic art is all around us everywhere everyday. The graphics on your clothing, painted vases and even hand painted picture frames are only a few examples. This particular field of art is seemingly endless. This is why it is rare for your to hear the phrase, “I am a graphic artist,” as a career description. It is more often described specifically as a lithographer or an etcher, for example.

Even what is looked upon as simple craft projects is, in reality, a form of graphic art. Often times these forms or art are dismissed and taken lightly by on lookers. Let me explain:

  • Stenciling: Do you like to stencil paint designs on to the walls of your home or any other surface? This is a form of graphic art.
  • Scrapbooking: Do you enjoy scrapbooking and designing each page? This form or graphic art is all the rage lately.
  • Greeting Cards: Do you enjoy creating handmade greeting cards using craft materials or your computer software and printer? You are creating graphic art!
  • Rubber Stamping: Do you enjoy rubber stamp art? This is a form of graphic art that can be incorporated with making greeting cards, scrapbooking and so on.
  • Glass Painting: Those little craft projects you work on with old baby food jars or mason jars are a form of graphic art that has been created with children for many generations.
  • The list can go on and on! As I mentioned before, this form or art is seemingly endless!

Graphic art can be something very complicated such as the works of M.C. Escher or Robert Rauchenberg. Or, as described above, something as “simple” as rubber-stamp art. It should not matter how complicated or simple the piece is; it is still graphic art and deserves equal admiration. These creations require imagination, effort, and certain levels of skill, patience and time. So, if you are no Picasso, don’t worry about it! You don’t need to be in order to enjoy creating!
