Food and Travel is Fun at This Site

One of the joys of being a food and travel writer is that I've always enjoyed sharing my work with my children. As a result, they enjoy writing (and write very well), have an appreciation for the cuisines of other cultures-although I should never have introduced my son to sushi because birthday celebrations can become expensive-and they like to travel.

And, some of my best article ideas have come from my children. Just recently, for example, my daughter sent me this e-mail about a terrific site:

"Mom, I found this great web site (http://expedition.bensenville.lib.il.us/)

I say we pick one country each a week (or let the men pick it) and make a recipe from that country and then be able to locate it on the map.

It would be fun then to have a quiz between the 4 of us (Eric too if he would like) when we get together that we have to locate on a map the countries we learned about and say a fact (major export, say) about that country.

The winner gets dinner out at the restaurant of their choice and the losers have to pay evenly for the bill. How about something like that? Fun? Love, Erica"

Well, I immediately went to the site and found that this location on the web site of the Bensenville Library in Illinois has recipes from around the world. And, in addition, they also have basic facts about each that helps you understand the culture.

So, while our family is playing this game to learn about other countries-and have fun sampling different foods-why don't you plan along too, with friends and family. What would be even more fun would be to have an international gourmet nights where you either picked one country to concentrate on or picked several and have a pot-luck and then talk about that country or countries.

This could also be an awesome way for parents and teachers to help children become interested in other cultures. And, who knows, you might just interest someone in becoming a food a travel writer.

If I were a travel agent, I'd use this as a marketing tool to let my clients know about other countries that they would enjoy traveling to.

There are many ways that this site, as well as others could be used to bring the peoples of the world a little closer together by sharing the foods that they love.
