I wasn't disappointed. This innovative cookbook is filled with countless recipes that are quick and easy to prepare, yet deliver solid Indian flavor. There's even a note on each recipe indicating how much preparation, as well as cooking time it takes.
But, in addition to the time-saving recipes, I also like the book's format (although I do prefer spiral bound cookbooks because they lie flat.) But this book is organized in a very innovative way, with chapter headings, such as The Boss is Coming, No-Meat Fridays and Some Like it Hot. Definitely, not your normal boring Soup and Salad listings.
Throughout the book there are tidbits of information, either about the recipes or Indian cooking that make it a cookbook that you'll want to read as well as use. In Dehli Fare for Four, Monica tells us that she cooked this menu for her first Valentine Day's together with her husband. "I am living proof that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach," she writes "he proposed the next day."
But, most of all, I like the fact that Monica Bhide's cookbook reflects the cosmopolitan world that we live in today. Yes, it is an Indian book, but it doesn't treat Indian food as if it exists in a vacuum. It reflects the fact that Indian people live all over the world and are influenced by other cuisines and holidays. Turkey Day, for example, reflects the fact that Monica used to spend Thanksgiving in the U. S. when she was a "poor lonely graduate student with no family here."
If you like Indian cuisine and think that you don't have the time to enjoy the taste of India, check out this book, which also includes a listing of ethnic grocery sources. Before long, you'll be able to sit down to dishes such as Shrimp Sachets, Indian Flat Bread, as well as Savory Indian Wafers with Potatoes and Onions.
