Montpelier Cookbook offers Southern Hospitality

Unlike many historic cookbooks, you won't find obscure recipes that call for "a walnut size piece of lard." While it's nice to read "authentic" recipes, few of us want to cook from them on a daily basis.

The recipes in Montpelier Hospitality, which include many convenience foods, are realistic and ideally suited for today's cook who doesn't have a lot of time and is concerned about health as well. Yet, there are numerous recipes that give you the satisfaction of cooking from scratch, without grinding your own wheat berries.

I challenge you to flip through just a couple of pages of this cookbook without noting ones that you'd instantly want to make. The recipes are upscale, Junior League style, yet practical. Many have been served at luncheons and receptions at Montpelier, so you know they work.

Montpelier Hospitality is available at the Montpelier Museum Shop, which is open daily from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Telephone orders are being taken at 540-672-0003. Montpelier Hospitality is available at $21.95 per copy, plus shipping and handling charges.

Montpelier is located four miles southwest of Orange on Route 20. Montpelier is a National Trust historic site, administered by the Montpelier Foundation, an independent non-profit organization. Additional information about Montpelier is available at www.montpelier.org.
