Outside, the crisp chill of the early winter night made us eager to be
inside. Yet, we didn’t realize that, in addition to warming our bodies,
the evening’s program at the Penang Restaurant in Bethesda, Md. would
warm our souls as well. But, I should have known that. When I visited
Malaysia a couple of years ago, I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of
its people. Everyone from general managers of hotels to the bus boys,
who took away my breakfast plates, seemed truly genuinely pleased to
have me as a visitor to their country.
As travel writers and photographers, my husband and I had been invited tonight, along with a few other writers and numerous travel agents, to get an update about the various travel options within Malaysia. We were especially honored that H.E. Dato’ Ghazzali Sheikh Abdul Khalid, the Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, joined us and shared some of his thoughts about this diverse country. It was most appropriate that the evening’s event was centered around a veritable feast of Malaysian foods because, as the tall, trim Ambassador told us “it reflects an important feature of Malaysian life—the love of eating.” “If you are so inclined, you can have your meals round-the-clock, from all-night restaurants to roadside stalls. The Malaysian habit so struck an English writer that he described Malaysia as one big truck shop.” And what a rich cornucopia of foods you will find in Malaysia. With, among others, a native Malaysian, as well as Chinese and an Indian population, Malaysian food is a multi-cultural feast. And, while hawker or food from stalls along the street are extremely popular, Malaysia has a wide range of dining options that also include many upscale restaurants. I was so impressed with Malaysia’s range of restaurants, that, after my visit, I began to write for another web site as well www.eatdrinkmalaysia.com “Our celebration of multi-culturalism extends beyond the dining table,” the Ambassador said. “You will find this rich diversity in the different languages, music, dances, costumes, as well as cultural and religious traditions and festivals.” And, in addition to the overwhelming natural beauty of rainforests and dramatic flora and fauna—a photographer’s dream—, Malaysia also offers outstanding nightlife in cities such as Kuala-Lumpur. Malaysia is ancient, yet very modern. And, one of the most enjoyable parts about visiting Malaysia is that if you fly Malaysian Airlines, you can experience this outstanding hospitality during your flight as well. From the multi-cultural cuisine to the warm, gracious hospitality of the crew, your airtime will be something to write home about as well.
