At home or while traveling, it's tough to resist tempting holiday foods.
Here are some tips to help you celebrate with care so you’ll be able to enjoy the holiday season more and gain less. (The holiday bills in January are enough; no one needs extra pounds, too.) Don’t crash-diet just beforehand to try to make up for extra eating during the holidays. Crash diets usually cause you to regain more weight than you lose. If you go on an intense diet just before the holidays, you’ll be more likely to binge when the season arrives. Start with good intentions. Decide to eat and drink sensibly. Make a pact with someone else and resolve to be strong together. Don’t expect miracles of yourself during the holidays. Recognize that this season is going to be filled with tempting food. Unless you’re under a doctor’s orders, now is not the time to try to lose weight. Look upon the holiday season as a temporary truce on the war against fat. While you may not lose any weight, try not to gain any. Make up your mind to be satisfied with smaller portions. Go especially easy on those fattening desserts, and skip seconds. When you do this, don’t look upon it as depriving yourself. Think of it as improving yourself! Develop some holiday party strategy: Eat a low-calorie snack before the party. Arrive fashionably late at cocktail parties so you miss some of the temptation to eat more. Position yourself away from the food. Find someone interesting to talk to. Limit your intake of high-calorie alcoholic beverages. Let spritzers, sparkling water, and diet beverages help you satisfy your need to have something to do with your hands. Avoid kitchen-counter capers. Drink water, chew on celery and carrot sticks, or try some sugarless gum to keep you from feeding your face on little tidbits while you’re cooking. Exercise every day. You’re busier than ever, and you really don’t have the time to exercise, but to get through the Holiday Danger Zone, you have to make time for regular exercise. Exercise will help you burn off extra calories. You will also feel better after you exercise. It relieves a lot of the stress and fatigue that might make you overindulge.
