In Germany, Breakfast is First

Traveling to Germany this year for your vacation? If so, you're in for a culinary treat. Yes, you'll be able to enjoy some of the finest Bratwurst and beer this side of heaven, and the wide range of ethnic fare in Germany might surprise you. From Italian and French to Turkish and Oriental, you'll find a vast array of delicious international cuisine awaiting you.

But it's the breakfasts here that will make you want to stay. Breakfast in Germany is a major event. If you're not a breakfast eater, you might want to change your habits, because the morning meals here are just too good to miss.

First of all, the breakfasts in Germany can really help stretch your travel budget. Most lodging accommodations offer a breakfast buffet as part of the rate, and it's an incredible value. The larger the hotel, of course, the larger the selection, but even in a smaller family-run gasthaus (guesthouse), you'll probably encounter more food than you'll ever be able to do justice to.With such a large breakfast, you don't have to spend as much for lunch-if you can eat at all after such a large repast.

From a full array of bacon, sausage and eggs, to cereals, cheeses, fruits, you'll find it difficult to make your selections from so many options. Whatever you select, save room for the outstanding German breads, especially their seeded rolls and, in many cases, paper-thin slices of smoked salmon, a true delicacy. It pays to rise and shine early because the salmon can disappear quickly. In some of the finer hotels, you'll even find fresh tomatoes (in season) and freshly made Mozzarella cheese.

So, pack your appetite and remember to look for "Frühstück inbegriffen" (breakfast included) when you select accommodations. But, just because there's no sign, that doesn't mean that they don't include breakfast. Just ask.

Then enjoy your breakfast and, to practice your German, tell the server or manager Das Essen war sehr gut (pronounced, dass essen vaar zayr goot) (That was a very good meal!)
