You don't have to travel to exotic places to enjoy great food. Sometimes, it is right in your hometown--or within a few hours drive. Recently, I discovered two gems I'd like to tell you about.
The first is India Grill, Fine Indian Cuisine, at 2600 East Market Street in York, Pennsylvania. We love Indian food but, since the restaurant is located in a hotel--and part of the title was "sports bar," we were somewhat reluctant to try it. You know the old-wives tale about hotel food not being great--and we are not into sports or bars. We prefer elegant. But our love for Indian food won out, and we tried it. Besides, the alternatives were chain restaurants--not something we enjoy. We were most pleasantly surprised to find that the sports bar is completely separate from a most upscale, yet not pretentious, dining area. The food was flavorful, as Indian food always is for us, and the ambiance was outstanding. The most professional waiter even wiped the already clean plates before placing them down in front of us. The menu is extensive and features a fine array of vegetarian specialties as well as chicken and seafood and, my favorite, food from the tandoor. I dined on the Chicken Tikka, moist boneless marinated chicken cooked in the tandoor. My husband even shared his Chicken Vindaloo, hot and spicy chicken and potatoes in a tangy, sharp sauce. We don't get to York, Pennsylvania very often--usually just the second Saturday in June for the World's Greatest Yard sale, but, when we do, you bet that we make reservations at the Quality Inn & Suites, which we also enjoyed, and then will return here for dinner. We might even try to be there for their unlimited luncheon buffet. For more information on India Grill, Fine Indian Cuisine, call 717-600-0013. Quality Inn & Suites, 2600 East Market Street, York, Pennsylvania The Coffee Cafe Our other delightful discovery is in historic Strasburg, Virginia, which is a special treat for those who like antiques and indoor flea markets. Shopping here is better than many antique malls and flea markets, because of The Coffee Café, located inside of the largest antique emporium in Virginia. After a morning of shopping, we enjoyed a delicious luncheon, with a menu that features such choices as a Chicken Caesar wrap (grilled Italian chicken breast, Parmesan cheese, lettuce, tomato and Caesar dressing), as well as The Works (baked ham, smoked turkey, Swiss and American cheese, lettuce and tomato, topped off with mayo.)
