It's always a treat to make the short drive from busy San Francisco and enter scenic Sonoma County. Once the land of apple farmers, these rolling hills are now known for its vineyards, which produce some outstanding world-class wines. Visit Sonoma County yourself, and you'll see that it has the perfect blend of soil, sun and just enough moisture to make it an ideal climate to produce top-quality grapes.

When you start with great grapes, and put them in the hands of knowledgeable and dedicated winemakers, the result is definitely quality wines.

One Sonoma Winery that is very popular is Turning Leaf Vineyards. Now, in celebration of its tenth anniversary, Turning Leaf Vineyard has introduced its Sonoma Reserve portfolio, made from grapes grown exclusively in the lush Sonoma Valley. Here are two that we tried and enjoyed.

Turning Leaf, Sonoma Reserve, 2003 Chardonnay. This is a pleasantly dry wine with a lovely blend of subtle fruit flavors, with a crisp finish. It's a wine that stands up well when served with rich cuisine such as creamy fettuccini or even spicy Thai food.

Turning Leaf, Sonoma Reserve, 2003 Pinot Noir. Also made exclusively from Sonoma grapes, this quality red pairs perfectly with a wide variety of foods, so don't hesitate to try it with meats such as pork or even seafood. It's deliciously fruity, with just enough overtones of vanilla and toasted oak to give it a very satisfying finish.

To offer even more variety to consumers, Turning Leaf has added two more wines to its signature Sonoma Reserve portfolio: Turning Leaf, Sonoma Reserve 2003 Merlot and its 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon-both of which promise to deliver full-bodied taste at a very reasonable price. Each of these stylish wines is available at retailers nationwide. They have a suggested retail price of about $12.

Now that fall is just around the corner, you might want to bring wines as host and hostess gifts. To carry out the artistic Turning Leaf design, you can place a white and a red in a basket filled with straw-like cushioning and tuck in a few fall leaves, either from a craft store or from an accommodating maple tree. It also makes a very classy housewarming gift.
