Treat Yourself to Guru Authentic Indian Cuisine

Never underestimate the power of the press. A couple of years ago, the food section of the Freelance Star, my local newspaper, asked what type of restaurants readers would like to have come to Fredericksburg, Virginia.

My response was immediate. Before moving to the area, I had lived just outside of Washington, D.C. where I had easy access to a variety of Indian restaurants. In our new location, there were none, so I quickly voted for Indian cuisine.

According to the survey, others apparently suggested Indian as well, and, before long, an Indian entrepreneur decided that, if that's what the residents of Fredericksburg, Virginia, wanted, he would give it to them. As a result, Guru Restaurant was opened.

Now, my husband and I are now regulars at Guru Restaurant, where we treat ourselves to Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, Naan, as well as a variety of vegetarian dishes with lentils and potatoes.

Actuallly, it's painful to write this now because we will not be dining there today, and just thinking about it makes me long for the unique flavor of the delicately blended spices and herbs in this cuisine. In addition to being delicious, it is reasonably priced, and the service professional and friendly. We especially like the Guru's luncheon buffet, where you can select from a variety of dishes and learn about different menu items.

While the buffet is not served at night, we still like to dine there because the atmosphere is exotically elegant. Dim lighting, soft musical chanting and innovative entrees such as Chicken Tikka Masala--charbroiled chunks of chicken, cooked to perfection in the chef's secret blend of spices--keep us coming back. Judging from the popularity of the Guru, others are enjoying it as much as we are. It was especially gratifying to me to overhear a conversation there one night where one man told the others in his party about the article in the Freelance Star and how readers indicated that they wanted an Indian restaurant in the area. So, the moral of the story is definitely to speak up and let people know your preferences. You just might get what you wish for.

If you ever find yourself in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in the Central Park area and want something other than food from major restaurant chains, do look up the Guru at 1320 Central Park Blvd., Suite 112. In about two weeks, you'll be able to find them on the web at www.guruindiancuisine.com
