This Sisters - "Ultra Rare Trax"

For once I managed to dig up a Studio bootleg of The Sisters of Mercy. And for once even an interesting one. This is, as the title "Ultra Rare Trax" insinuates, a collection of odd tracks that were never released or even was never ment to be released at all. This collection stretches from the early days to the floodland days and starts off with the "cover" of Leonard Cohen's "Teachers", and ends with a demo recording of "Lucretia My Reflection" I will try to go over the tracks one by one and give you the idea of the content of this disc.

1. Teachers
This is the lyrics of Leonard Cohens Teachers, but the music is obviously different both from the original version and the version the Sisters is playing live today in a medley together with On the Wire.
This piece mostly strange, and obviously nothing you would find yourself singing along to.

2. Adrenochrome
"An early take on a later classic, this joined together with the above track when played live to make a scorching finale", states the record sleeve. Nothing really special about this one compared to "original", found on the "Body Electric" Single, or "Some Girls Wander By Mistake" if you like.

3. Good Things
This is probably the only song, from the time when Ben Gunn was in the band, that was never released. This would not be it's first appearance on later releases as the fans seem to have known and known about this piece for quite some time, just like most of the tracks on this compilation.

4. Phantom
..As boring as always :o)

5. Floorshow
Another early recording or even an early versionm of a later classic. Nothing really special about this one either.

6. Lights
"Another early four track demo recorded in a dark basement in Leeds."

7. A rock and a hard place
This one is interesting. My first thought would have to have been "!?!?". It starts of with the or a bass-line, played by a synthesizer, which continues throughout the song. This is an "alternate" version of the song, recorded during the First & Last & Always sessions. The sleeve encourages the listener to "Play loud for maximum effect."P>

8. Garden of Delight
A song that was recorded and was planned to be released as a single. Obviously, this never happened and if the reason was that it was in fact written by Wayne Hussey...who knows?
A reworked version was released by Hussey's later and current band, The Mission
