Status Quo

Apr 20, 2001 - © Bill Howard

These are the dog days of professional golf. The Masters is, regrettably, over. The weeks stretch away into the distant future until the US Open in June. With players juggling their commitments and schedules until shortly before then, tournament fields will rarely feature all the marquee players playing in the same locale. The PGA Tour can get a bit dull between now and then.

On the LPGA Tour, they seem to be having some difficulty finding someone besides Annika Sorenstam who can win. This is not a real surprise because the lady in question can really play. She also possesses a golf swing that is a joy to watch. The real surprise on the LPGA Tour thus far this year is that no American player has won yet. Let me repeat that. No American player has won yet this year.

Therefore, I choose not to write about the tours for a while. I'm sure they will get along just fine without my scrutiny.

Something that might entertain you this week is the first chapter of a new golf book. The title is Fore! Play: The Last American Male to Take Up Golf. It was written by Bill Geist. I found it by virtue of a promotional e-mail. I get these things on occasion and usually delete them forthwith. For some reason, I decided to read this one. I am very glad I did. Chapter One is available to you at http://www.twbookmark.com/books/1/044652... . The book is due to be out in a few weeks. It will also be available as an ebook, for those of you so inclined.

I may be able to get a few copies to give away as prizes. All I would need is some sort of excruciating contest. I am open to suggestions. Let me know what you think of the preview chapter.
