Random Thoughts On The British© Bill Howard
In order to completely cleanse my soul in regard to the British Open, I need to point out the following:
There is absolutely no doubt that Mr. woods is the finest player extant. That having been said, I feel somehow cheated. I was really looking forward to some "the heavy stuff won't come down for quite a while yet" type weather to add a little luster to Tiger's triumph. Gray, wet, and cold is the way to go in the British. I'd pay a significant sum to see Tiger tee it up against Ben Hogan in his prime. Eerily similar, those two. At this point, my money would still be on Hogan. Peter Aliss did a magnificent job during the Open telecast. I miss Henry Longhurst. The tape of Doug Sanders missing that short putt is still excruciating to watch. The Road hole is the best par 4 on the planet. Even in the midst of Tiger's triumphant march to the clubhouse, it extracted its pound of flesh. His bogey there prevented Tiger from getting in at 20 under par. The thing scares me. Speaking of which, if not for an extremely fortunate bounce off of its sodden face, David Duval might still be endeavoring to escape the Road Bunker. Ernie Els's play in the Majors this year proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that timing is everything. Paidrag Harrington can play. Keep an eye on him. How long do we wait for Colin Montgomerie to blossom? Tiger is starting to look like a golfer in definite need of a challenger. The remarkable thing about Tiger's game isn't the power, the touch, or the confidence. It's the precision. He traveled 72 holes around St. Andrews without setting foot in a bunker. You can't even see most of them until you're standing on top of them. Do you realize how minute his mistakes must have been? How many players do you suppose will be figuring what 2nd place pays after Tiger shoots 68 in the first round of the PGA? Discuss these amongst yourselves. Or send me an outraged e-mail.
