Golf Balls Are Hard To Dribble

Shame on you! You should be watching basketball this weekend. You should be casting aspersions on the basketball knowledge of your friends and loved ones. You should be taunting acquaintances and co-workers. You should be feverishly updating your progress in the hundreds of bracket pick 'em contests available via the Internet ( this is real progress). Maybe you'll have a few hours to kill in the early morning before the hoops get underway. Here's a good way to squander the time. Last week I needed to research some hickory shafted golf clubs for an article. I happened upon http://www.hickorygolf.com . The web site is run by a gentleman named Ralph Livingston III. There is a phenomenal amount of information regarding the identification, acquisition, and care of these marvelous instruments. There is also quite a nice collection of links. Of them, Golf for All Ages, Golf Collectors Society, and Old Course were the most interesting and informative. I have always had a weakness for hickory shafted golf clubs. As a consequence, I find this site, and any resembling it, to be endlessly absorbing. The clubs are beautiful and their makers were expressing their individuality instead of trying to appeal to a broad market. Even the early "mass produced" clubs are lovingly made. There are catalogs to order, articles on a variety of subjects, and you can try to identify any hickories you have lying around. The real surprise at Hickory Golf was discovering an entire subculture of golfers who play with hickory shafted clubs from the early part of the last century. These hearty souls play tournaments all over the world. I have a few hickories in the garage. I'm hoping they'll hold one of their tournaments in Florida. That's it. I think there's a basketball game on.
