Silence Is Golden

It's certainly an impressive sight at the 18th hole when there are several thousand fans watching the golfers putt and as they are over the ball you can hear the proverbial pin drop. I get nervous when I have a small gallery at the first tee box and can't imagine the pressure of knowing there are all of these people staring at me while I prepare to hit the ball.. The crowd invariably breaks into a murmur once the ball is struck and I think I would, as a professional golfer, anticipate this murmur and make too quick a swing at the ball. I wonder if this is what they call the "yips"? I know when I was a teenager we would exclaim "Yipes" when we were startled. Yips, yipes, you really have to question the relationship.

There is one guy, and it sounds like the same guy at every tournament, who screams "In the hole!" every time a ball is struck. If God is a golf fan this man will not make it through the pearly gates but will be consigned to a golf course in Hell where the ball never ever goes in the hole.

Keep swinging.
