Improve your game quickly. Rule 1.

© Russell G. Bell

I have already written one article about slow play on the golf course and laid most of the blame for the slow play on the female golfer, at least that is how I remember it and now it is time to set the record straight. Although I stand by what I wrote earlier you can still speed up your play, by following a few simple rules, even when the Golf Gods are out to nail you.

I have used the term Ready Golf for many years without realizing there is actually a group that has formed a Ready Golf Club and established rules to speed up your play. You can join this club at http://readygolfclub.com. It is free to join and you can print out the rules I am now going to go over with you. I can't recommend this site enough. If everyone played ready golf we would not need the marshals running around the course being pests. Those golf carts could be put to better use by giving them to beverage girls in skimpy attire. Once again my gender bias shows through. Oh well, it's my article and I can write what I want without worry of being politically correct, but I am off subject and now it's back to Ready Golf.

The ready golf folks say Rule 1 covers your actions at the Pro Shop, it pertains to early arrival, gathering of current course information, checking your bag to assure regulation and uninterrupted play. They recommend you arrive 15 minutes before your tee time. I say BAH HUMBUG, which is most appropriate when you are playing over Christmas break somewhere warm.

I recommend 30 minutes over the 15 that Ready Golf promotes because this is one location where Murphy's Law will take its toll. If you only allow 15 minutes there will only be one Pro Shop employee and he/she will be helping someone interested in spending $1,000 plus on a new set of Nike clubs, explaining why some golf balls have different dimple patterns, the pros and cons of natural leather gloves versus synthetic fabric gloves or the cash register will be out of receipt paper and it needs to be replaced as this is the proof you show the starter you have paid for your round of golf. If you allow 30 minutes there will be a minimum of four Pro Shop staff waiting to assist you and they will give you the up to date course instructions, cart path rules, under construction areas, 5 day weather forecast, and the top five popular names for your next born male child. All this for a lousy extra fifteen minutes!
