Holiday Gift Suggestions

Most of these gifts are also suitable for the second group of seniors but you might prefer to give items for which there is more of a need. These include:

  • Stamps, greeting cards, writing paper
  • Comfortable slippers
  • Newspaper subscription
  • Gift certificates for utility bills, cable TV, groceries
  • Cordless telephone
  • Handrails installed in bathroom(s)
  • Medic alert identification/registration

If you live close to the recipient(s) you can give gifts of items like a monthly meal--prepare and deliver it or take the recipient(s) out to eat--or an afternoon movie once a month might be a real treat.

For those seniors who are alone, frequent visits are a special event and you might perform chores while there--things that don't require technical expertise but may be more strenuous than the person can do for him/herself. These would include changing overhead light bulbs, replacing faucet washers, laundering curtains, taking drapes to dry cleaners, shaking and/or laundering rugs, cutting grass, raking leaves, trimming bushes and shrubs. The list is endless.

Take your pick and enjoy the gift of giving. When we reach the point we no longer find the task enjoyable, it's time to stop and ask ourselves why and then change direction if that's needed.

May our world find peace
as we enetr our 21st century
and may the joy of the season
transcend pain, loss and daily problems
as we rejoice in our many blessings.
