excess of a hundred degrees for up to four days.

* Aches and pains are normally very slight with a cold but are typically present with the flu and can become quite severe.

* Total exhaustion is an early and prominent flu symptom.

* Bronchitis often results from the flu and it can become life threatening.

The Hong Kong flu killed over 34,000 in the United States alone in 1968. Epidemics of flu come in cycles every two-three decades and the medical community is ever on the alert for the cyclical event. Information on surveillance of flu and vaccination is available online at the Centers for Disease Control.

Other comments for November:

* November 7th is Election Day in the U.S. and November 27th in Canada. Don't forget to vote. It's a privilege for which
many people gave their lives.

* November 11th is Veterans Day. Let's remember those who served, in war and peace, with a special moment for the seventeen men and women who perished last month aboard the USS Cole.

* November 26th is Thanksgiving Day in the States. Whether we celebrate this holiday or not, let's take a moment to give thanks for what we have and remember those less fortunate. We can share with our time, our talents and our gifts.

I'll be in Belize over Thanksgiving. This Central American country was once British Honduras and is a favorite retirement spot for many. I hope to learn enough about the ex-patriot communities to fill a column in the future.

December's column will be devoted to gift ideas for seniors and/or "those who have everything." I hope some of you will write me with suggestions: taborwarren@suite101.com
