to the needs of others: I open doors, take items from top shelves, offer to carry heavy packages. Sadly, many offers of help today are met with suspicion and declined, but I still ask.

In addition to offers of assistance, don't forget cards, telephone calls, and visits. For someone who is normally active, limited mobility can be very lonely. I can personally vouch for how meaningful those small acts of kindness are.
