One of the most well respected and highly esteemed goddesses of the Greek and Roman world was Astrea. Astrea is the goddess of justice. She stands proud with a stern look upon her once joyful face, as she holds a sword in one hand and the scales of justice in the other hand. She is judgement and justice, and she is purity.
Astrea is the daughter of the god, Zeus and the goddess, Themis. Some classical resources list her as the daughter of the king of Arcadia, Astraeus. Still, others claim her to be the daughter of Titan and Aurora, and others name her father as Jupiter. Regardless of the variance in conception theories, the rest of the legend remains consistent in the telling from various sources. Astrea was a pure goddess. She was born and lived on Earth during the Golden Age. This was a time of peace and joy for the Earth. The inhabitants were free of rage, insecurity and violence. This was an age ruled by the god, Saturn, and Astrea mixed freely with the mortals of the time with no fear of losing her innocence. The people of the Golden Age lived in harmony. They tilled the ground and grew their own food, and there was always enough resources for everyone. They were self contained, and had no need of outside help. However, as with most things, a change began to occur in the peaceful age. As the elders of the Golden Age passed on to the other world, the new age began to dawn. The children of the Golden Age were not as stable and balanced as their forefathers were, and they frequently fought amongst each other. For the first time, the Earth knew the sound of fighting and the feel of discontent. When Zeus saw that the Silver Age had begun on Earth, he called his daughter to the heavens. She was no longer allowed to roam freely among the mortals, and her time spent on Earth was drastically changed. Astrea, because of her innocent and just nature, was sent to the people of the Silver Age when justice was needed. Most often, she came to Earth to tell people of their crimes and try to lead them along the peaceful way. Her calls for peace went unheeded. As the elders of the Silver Age passed on to the other world, another age began to assert itself. The children of the Silver Age were violent and brazen. They were jealous of one another, and they were not content with petty squabbles. Go To Page: 1 2
