Gaea, Earth Mother

Among the children, that Gaea gave birth to, were the Hecatonchires. These were truly ugly monsters, with 50 heads and 100 arms each. They were locked up by Uranus in Tartarus because he was so disgusted by Cottus, Briareus, and Gyges. They were called the spirits of punishment.

Gaea's children were all gods, born of unions between her and her offspring; many of them were true monsters. The monstrous children were the bane of human life. The Nemean lion, Cerbeus, and Sphinx were among the grandchildren of Gaea.
