Hecate: Goddess of the CrossroadsHecate was said to travel with a pack of black dogs that howled to announce her approach. The simple appearance of a group of black dogs sent people scurrying to make sacrifice to appease the goddess. Often dogs and lambs were sacrificed to keep the Dark Goddess happy. It was accepted as fact that Hecate led the ghostly hounds through the night on wild hunts. The dogs' howling grows louder. She knows they're not far from her. She can smell their musky, wild dog odor. She turns her back on the image and walks quickly toward her home. Her father had warned her not to be slow. She felt a presence; someone was coming up quickly behind her. Her steps quicken as she remembers tales of those that have turned to find themselves face to face with the Goddess of the Underworld, Hecate and her hounds of Hell. Her home is in sight and she knows that safety awaits her within those walls. Is she imagining the breath she feels upon the back of her hair? She is shaking with fear as she runs the last few steps to open the door and step inside her home. With her back against the door she stands, panting and out of breath. Next time she will go with her family to the crossroads.
