Goat's Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the barn, Not a creature was stirring, all was quiet on the farm. The stockings were hung from nails high above, With each goat's name hand stitched with love. The night was cold, crisp, and crystal clear, As hubby and I waited in the loft for Santa to appear. Giant snowflakes started gently drifting down, And magically covered the ground. The goats were nestled snug in their stalls, Piled on each other in straw against the walls. Hubby and I shared a hug, As they lay sleeping snug as bugs in a rug. All of a sudden we heard such a racket! I muffled a scream and hubby grabbed the hatchet. He threw open the barn door to see what he might, While I stood there shaking and full of fright. He chuckled and whispered, "You won't believe this!" And then said, "Hurry, so you don't miss!" A brown Santa, red cart, and kids; there were eight, Santa baying to them, "Hurry, or we'll be late!" His red sweater was full of holes and torn, A red ribbon tied about his horns. Kids sporting stocking caps and striped socks, To keep warm their heads and hocks. The cart was laden with lots of goodies for goats, A cable spool, a bucket heater that floats. Tree stumps on which to lounge, a pine tree to nibble, All of these would cause quite a quibble. Hubby and I watched from our perch, As Santa fetched gifts with a careful search. Each stocking was filled with a special treat, Of course, it was something good to eat. The kids readied their gifts under the pine tree, To be sure their leavings all the goats could see. Animal crackers, alfalfa hay, and new feed pails, All the while wagging their little tails. Just as quickly as they came, they were off with a dash, Santa, cart, and kids were gone in a flash. The goats awoke to this beautiful sight, Their gifts piled high in the dim barn light. As Hubby and I trekked arm in arm to the house in the snow, At this special time we just wanted to let you know. That on this cold and white winter night, We wish you a Merry Christmas and to all a good night.
