"Bridging to the New Millenium"

Sorry to all about being ten days late with this new article, I have been up to my ears in final preparation for a Girl Scout bridging ceremony.

A "bridging" ceremony for those not familiar can be done in different ways. The whole end purpose is to move girls from one level of Girl Scouting to another.

Our ceremony is planned to be formal. We have a real bridge and the girls are called by troop number and then name. As they cross they are "received" on the other side by a Junior girl or Cadette girl, whatever group they may be bridging into. The girls are given a certificate and then later at their own troop awards are given their "fly-up wings," and "bridges," (or rainbows).

The second part of our ceremony is a candle lighting. The girls each receive a candle and are reminded that Juliette Low started this tradition. The burnt wick stands for old friends and the new candle stands for friends yet to be made. They are reminded to take this candle and let the "flame of Girl Scouting" burn brightly in their lives." It is really a very nice touch.

We have also chosen to have a buffet dinner and a flag ceremony. This ceremony marks the formal end to our scouting year.

I look forward to this because it signals that summer is approaching and that my "busy-iness" with girl scouts will taper off until August so I will have time to catch up on "home things" and in "cleaning up" the books for next year.

So when March 12th rolls around, say a prayer for me.
