THE NEW MILLENIUM AND GIRL/BOY SCOUTING

It came to mind that I would like to sit here at my computer and write an article on how I felt this whole millennium thing is way overblown, because it is!

I did however come to the conclusion after some thought that there is one simple undeniable fact, we are starting the new year and the new millenium the same way we ended the old year and the old millenium, we have the same crimes, same drugs, and the same inhumanity and intolerance. Nothing will change at the stroke of midnight, nothing magical will happen! When we wake up in the morning it will still all be there, and who is going to continue to suffer the most, the children!

They deserve better, we all do!

That is why I am such an advocate of scouting. Scouting changes children, and adults also, scouting has changed with the times but remains "traditional." Scouting puts you in touch with God's creation; it allows kids to interact with their peers in a positive way. It instills in children good, intrinsic moral values, and tolerance for others.

I have four children in scouting and I have seen firsthand the good positive changes it has created in my own. I have a son, who is ADHD, and PDD, and I have a son who is autistic both are in scouting and I have seen the benefits! My ADHD, or hyperactive son is more focused and does things with more care. My autistic son, who is eleven and is mentally on a scale of eight is accepted with "open arms" by boys who are his own age and they guide and help him with certain badges, yes, scouting does tailor itself to the handicapped of all types.

My two daughters are in scouting, I have a thirteen year old who is now a Cadette and is working on her Silver Award, she has been in scouting since she was in kindergarten. I have a nine year old who is a Brownie, bridging to Juniors next year. I have watched these girls grow up, mature, confident, and strong with their hearts aiming toward whatever God has set for them.

Scouting, it was great in the past, and is only going to get better in the future! So as this year ends and another one starts I wanted to just really say, "change the kids, and you will change the future." Scouting will do that!

May all of you have a very safe, happy, healthy, wonderful New Year, and whatever faith you may have, may your creator bless you with what you need, not what you want.
