There are usually two basic reasons that girls join Girl Scouting, the first being because mom was a scout or because their friends are doing it.
These are both admirable reasons but these reasons will not sustain them long term in girl scouting. Now you may think I am going to say something philosophical as to why girls should stay in girl scouting, I'm not! I am, however, going to give you three simple reasons that girls stay: (1) they have fun; (2) make new friends; (3)learn "life skills." It is really primary that girls start girl scouting at the basic level which is Daisies. But at whatever level they start, if they receive quality girl scouting they will develop skills which will carry them through a lifetime. There are five levels of scouting; Daisies, where they learn the basics of girl scouting like the promise and hand signs, etc., they make new friends and learn to share. From Daisies they bridge to Brownies where they learn most of the skills that will carry them through the last stages of scouting. In Brownies they learn food preparation and handling, manners, arts and crafts, they learn about ecology and the earth, and learn about different job professions. Brownies learn to make decisions about handling monies and budgeting and they also learn about the hi-tech world of computers. Most of these are done with hands-on experience being primary through field trips. Brownies then bridge to Juniors where they start to take more responsibility. They set up patrols, take attendance, make more decisions about troop monies and activities. From Juniors they bridge to Cadettes where they take on eighty-five percent of the work with guidance from the troop leader. It is at this stage the girls earn their Silver Award which requires several steps from the handbook and requires them to do a project which will be a learning tool and benefit the community. From Cadettes they then bridge to Seniors where they work on earning the coveted Gold Award. Once having earned this they have opened doors to a bright future. The Gold Award is equal to the Eagle Scout award and can also earn scholarships which is a big boost with the cost of college these days. In between each of these steps there is the camping, hiking, and field trips, various awards, etc. As girls get older there is a program called Wider Opportunities which allows older girls to branch out to different parts of the country and world.
