BOY SCOUTING (AN OVERVIEW)-PART II

© Paula Sandlak

Last month I discussed the basics of and gave an overview of Cub Scouting. This month I will discuss the Tiger Cubs and the Advancement Ranks more in depth.

TIGER CUBS

Tiger Cubs is a simple, fun program for first grade boys and their families. Tiger Cubs is a program that introduces boys and their families to Cub Scouting as they "Search, Discover, and Share" together.

This is a two-part program, the first part is when the Tiger and his adult member meet in the home to conduct activities for the whole family. The second part is where the Tiger and his adult partner meet with other Tigers and adult members using the "big idea," or theme for that month to do activities. Each of these meetings is called a "den" and is hosted by a Tiger-Adult partner team. The Tigers follow a school-year cycle, at the end of the cycle the Tiger "graduates" into a Cub Scout den where they can participate in activities like Cub Scout day camp.

ADVANCEMENT PLAN

The advancement plan provides fun and gives the boys a sense of personal achievement as they earn badges and strengthen family bonds and work with the adult partner on advancement projects.

BOBCAT

This is the first rank for all boys who join Cub Scouting.

WOLF

The Wolf program is for the boy who has completed first grade. To earn this badge they must pass twelve achievements that involve simple physical and mental challenges.

BEAR

The Bear rank is for the boy who has completed second grade. This rank gets harder, there are twenty-four achievements in four different categories. The Cub Scout must complete twelve of these to earn the Bear badge. The requirements are more difficult and challenging than for the Wolf.

WEBLOS

This program is for boy who has completed third grade. A boy may begin working on the Weblos badge as soon as he joins a Weblos den. The Weblos is the major transition step to the Boy Scouts. As the Weblos Scout completes requirements found in the handbook he will also be working on activity badges, attend meeting held by adults and become familiar with the Boy Scout requirements leading to the Arrow of Light which is the highest award in Cub Scouting. Weblos means "We Be Loyal Scouts."

Everything in Cub Scouts is geared to "doing" and to achieve the aims of Scouting-"citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and pack so it is important that there is constant attendance at these meetings.
