Working at a summer Camp Part 5Please see the fourth part from last week. My section director called me in to see her that night. She told me that someone in my family had been hospitalized and she said my dad was coming to pick me up the next day. I was very worried at that point. I tried not to show it when I was with my campers. I was given the day off to pack and prepare to go home. The day was so dark and dreary that I needed my lantern to see what I was doing. At the last minute I told my campers what was going on. I was vague so that they didn’t start to worry about their own families. The camp barged me to shore where my dad was waiting for me. We left and drove home that night. On the way home I was told that everyone was glad to have me home. I was even glad to be home myself. Two weeks had been enough. My mom had cried for ages that day when the barge had taken me away from her. My grand mom had been at a bed and breakfast in Newfoundland. The stairs there had been very steep and she had fallen down them. They had flown her back to New Brunswick where she lived and they had hospitalized her. She had two broken bones and was very depressed. We were told that as soon as she was removed from the hospital we should go down there and visit her and care for her. Despite all the difficulties and challenges, my experience at camp was most memorable. I really enjoyed the time I spent there and I thought that I was really lucky to have been chosen to work there. I never did see a moose, but I saw otters, loons, chipmunks, and lots of other neat wildlife. I met some new friends and found that everyone there was very caring and considerate. It helped me to become a better leader and it helped me to learn how to be more sharing and sensitive to the needs of others. I encourage everyone to try working with children in a summer camp for at least one week sometime in their lives. If you don’t want to be away from home for too long try a shorter job or watch for openings halfway through the summer. You might also try working at a day camp. Currently I am working as an on call lifeguard but will have to take the train to New Brunswick shortly. I am also trying to attain a voluntary position at another camp for children
