A path that is not recommended

Recently I met a girl who had dreams and plans similar to my own. She was five years older and had gone to the same university that I am to begin at this fall. This girl was extremely intelligent and had won many scholarships to fund her education. She had won the same scholarship as I had but had gone into the wrong degree program. It was called Life Sciences.

Life Sciences is a program commonly named Health Sciences or Biomedical Sciences at other schools. It has an extremely high entering average and the students in it intend on working in the health fields. However, this girl did not really think about what she wanted to do before she signed up, she went there because of the scholarship. When she entered the program she met wonderful people but had to work very hard to keep her marks up. The girl had to have had second thoughts. She just graduated this year and is so exhausted that she is taking a year off. She has only recently realized her mistake. She cannot get a job with her degree.

Luckily for her, she can still apply for Medical School because her grades were very good. However, she never really wanted to be a doctor. She is almost being forced to go into medicine because she cannot find another job anywhere else.

This is the problem with such specific degree problems. Students are keen on entering them because they cater to specific interests, but they may not be the best options. If you are entering university without really knowing what you want to be in four years, you should take a more general program, like Arts and Science. This type of program allows for much much more flexibility. In most universities you can take any courses you want first year to explore your options and you are given a chance to change your mind. Another suggestion- don’t go to a school just because they offer you money. I have met way too many students who have done this, only to end up unhappy and depressed over their choices later on. You can learn from this girl’s negative experience and not make the same mistakes she did. However, if you know you want to work in the Health Care field, the Life Sciences program may be for you.
