Keeping A Journal
In today’s stressful, dynamic world, fewer and fewer people are finding the time to write diaries. There is too much else to do. What a loss it is, that with all this increased activity, the memory of it is being rapidly forgotten. The role of the diary is underestimated. I myself have kept a diary since I was a baby (with the help of my parents) and in this article I will show you just how meaningful such a book is. When I am upset, or when I am lonely, I can look back in my diaries and laugh at the old times. When someone in my family forgets the details of a past event, I can look it up. When I wonder what I was like as a child, I can look back and be fascinated at all the changes I have gone through. When I experience all the horrors of life, I can complain to an unbiased piece of paper and finish light-minded and contented. When I have the biggest secret in the world, I can tell it to my diary and lose the temptation I feel to tell it to someone else. When I am filling out applications for jobs, schools, or scholarships, all my activities and hobbies are recorded and I don’t leave out anything important. When I have a decision to make I can look back on other decisions and see which choices were best. When I am fascinated by something, I can tell my diary, and it will never hurt me by telling me to be quiet or that I am boring. When a splendid experience is over, I can make it last forever by documenting it in my journal. When I dream I can record it in my diary for future reference and analysis. When someone in my family bothers me, I can write them a never-to-be-mailed letter that expresses my truest feelings. When I fail I can tell my diary and no one else will ever know. I can record anything from my food consumption, to my weekly schedule, to my list of read books or the manners I need to improve after reading an etiquette book. There are so many ways in which a diary can be a priceless keepsake. Just imagine if all our predecessors had kept them. If you haven’t started, it is an excellent resolution. If you have, keep it up, because not only will it benefit you, it will benefit your grandchildren to come.
