University Material

Universities are places which strive to find the most academic students they can. But today's university and scholarship applications ask for much more than marks. In today's competitive world they demand more than just marks and academic talent. Today's universities are places where a student lives, and all aspects of their lives will affect the university atmosphere. Community volunteerism, stong leadership and devoted extracurricular involvement are key factors in getting into the university of choice.

Universities consider volunteerism to be a crucial part of a student's character. Volunteering shows that a student is kind, caring and self-sacrificing. It shows that they have humanitarian characteristics. Universities have many places for volunteers on campus, and they want these places filled with enthusiastic and experienced students. Volunteering in high school is not only mentally rewarding but cash rewarding as well. Scholarships are readily given to students with volunteer experience in the local community, at school and really anywhere in the world.

Universities also consider leadership to be a very important aspect of character. They do not want someone who follows others and meekly sits through serious debates. Universities are places which change the world, and they want students who aren't afraid of change. Scholarship donors feel the same way. They want their money to fund students who show promise in leading the world of tomorrow. Joining school councils, starting charity events or heading clubs in the community are profitable in more ways than one.

Extracurricular involvement is critical to any university hopeful. There has not been one application for a university or for a scholarship that did not ask about extracurricular involvement. Universities are proud of their hundreds of clubs and they want joiners, not couch potatoes. Universities are very proud of their athletes, and scholarships are given to the most promising ones. Drama, arts, sports, leadership clubs, exchanges, charities, councils and other groups are all acceptable forms of extracurricular involvement. Extracurricular involvement gives students new views of life, beneficial talents and an advantage over fellow applicants.

Volunteering shows benevolence, leadership shows ability to change the world, and extracurricular involvement shows a well-rounded student. To beat the ever increasing competition for university admission and for financial assistance, these three characteristics must be shown in students. Any student who has all these, and great marks to complement them, should have ample financial support and many university acceptances when he or she applies for university.
