Money as a Roadblock in a Gifted Teen's
Development
Gifted and Talented teens are expensive.
They want to be involved in extracurricular activities
and they want to go away to post-secondary school
This can be a big problem for some financially
challenged families, because the gifted are not only
born to the rich. Fortunately, there are a number of
ways to overcome this obstacle and to give the teen
the opportunities he or she deserves. These include
free activities, discounts and scholarships and
bursaries.
Canada alone has innumerous opportunities
for teens which cost little or no money at all. One of
the best is Cadets- a government run program for
twelve to eighteen year olds. Teens can join this free
group for an exciting extracurricular activity. A free
uniform and trips are included as well as physical
fitness and outdoor learning. There is also a band.
Other groups, such as Girl Guides and Scouts are also
available for very low costs.
If an organization sees the talent or potential
of a teen, they are often more than willing to support
them financially in their endeavours. Camps will
subsidize costs for poor families. The Lions will
sponsor youth who wish to attend international camps
or who wish to go on international exchanges. I
myself was offer a thousand dollars for an exchange
to Brazil! There are 4-H clubs which offer clubs for
people with any interests under the sun for a meagre
fifteen dollars per year.
Bursaries and Scholarships are available to
gifted and talented teens. The higher the marks in
high school, the more community involvement and
the more volunteer work a teen does, the better their
chances for selection. Scholarships can pay a portion
or the entire cost of post-secondary school, exchanges
and other activities. A great web site to check is
www.studentawards.com. Bursaries and
Scholarships opportunities are often missed, so
careful research can be very rewarding. It takes time
to win a scholarship, but it is well worth it to the
winner!
Today there are many ways to earn money
needed for educational development. Perhaps
devoting time to an organization will entice them to
grant you some money. A good student hindered by
money will touch the heart of anyone in society
because everyone has been against money at some
time in their lives. The money is there and with a
good attitude, strong perseverance and promising
talent, any motivated teen can accomplish his or her
dreams. Even Ontario's Education Minister has said
that "Any student who wishes to go on to Post-
Secondary School will not be stopped due to lack of
financial resources."
