Blame It On the GhostWhile shopping last week I overheard a conversation between two young women who work in the deli of a local supermarket. The gist of that conversation was that they seem to believe a ghost is responsible for their problems in the deli. "She laughed at me when I said this place has a ghost…But how else can you explain everything being lost and broken?" One said to the other. "Well it must be a ghost…or something." The other answered with a quick shrug of the shoulders. I walked away wondering if the two of them really believe a ghost haunts their work area and just how often mishaps are blamed on ghosts. It would be interesting to know how often ghosts actually have anything to do with what is being attributed to them. When I was a child a family friend owned an extensive collection of delicate Dresden figurines. When she wasn’t around her daughter liked to take one particular figurine from the shelf for a closer look. When the keen eyed woman questioned the placement of that figurine her daughter declared it was probably the ghost again. Since everyone knew the house was haunted, it was an easy enough matter to blame it on the ghost. This young lady learned her lesson one morning when she woke to find the figurine broken and in pieces beneath her bed. The problem was, her mother made the discovery at about the same time. The girl swore that she'd not done the deed, but this time the evidence was stacked against her. After she was punished for something the ghost did, she promised never to blame anything else on the ghost again. A friend told me that her uncle used to blame "the ghost" for lights that were left on. He kept up this little charade until his wife brought a psychic pal home for dinner one evening. As they were clearing away the dishes he laughed and said, "That darn ghost must have left the lights on in the garage again." The psychic frowned at him. "Your spirit's name is Amelia, she's ten years old. And…" She stopped a moment. "Did you know that she cries every time you blame the lights on her?" "Well I…." He stammered. "It was only a joke!" "That's the trouble. People blame a helpless ghost for things and the ghost can't always defend itself. Amelia's been trying to tell you for years that she isn't responsible for turning the lights on."
