Have I Got a Ghost Story for You

I recently visited with a friend I hadn't seen in quite a while. We talked about the usual, families; the high cost of fuel, movies, and recipes. Eventually the subject turned to ghosts. My friend is from the Philippines and while we ate her delicious Chicken Adobo and Pancit, she shared this story of her homeland with me.

This is a true story because my aunt moved into the house and told us kids about it. There was this woman, I will call her Tessa, but that's not her real name. She was very beautiful and had many many admirers. But she was very cruel to them. Sometimes she would goad the men into arguments, then stand back and laugh as they fought over her.

Her mother warned her many times that it is dangerous to toy with people's emotions, but Tessa only laughed at her poor old mother's words.

"I can take care of myself" She insisted. But that wasn't so. One night, she found tricked two of her lovers into a showdown and found herself in the middle of a gunfight. Some people say that the men were so angry at Tessa's unfaithfulness, they decided to murder her. I believe she unwittingly stepped between them and was shot for her troubles.

Whatever the truth, she was killed right there in the front yard of her mother's house. Tessa's death drove her mother insane and it was many years before anyone would live in the home again. Eventually my aunt moved into the house with my widowed grandmother.

Shortly afterwards, Tessa's ghost appeared to my aunt and grandmother. "This is my house!" she screamed at them.

My grandmother was so frightened she shivered. But my aunt isn't afraid of anything and she boldly told the ghost, "It used to be your home, but now you are dead. So it stand's to reason that the only home you have is located in the City Cemetery."

The ghost vanished and they thought that was the end of her. They couldn't have been more wrong. They returned from church one evening to find rice and sugar strewn all over the kitchen. As they swept the floors they heard the cackling laughter of Tessa.

Now my aunt was very angry. "I will tell you this Tessa. You are dead! Either you leave this house peacefully to the living or I will have the house cleansed of you."

All of a sudden the house was dark. My aunt later said that it was as cold as a graveyard. The sounds of pitiful sobbing echoed through the house.
