I Live In a Haunted House; Life With Ghostly InhabitantsThe other night my husband and I were at a party when a young couple approached me. "We live in a haunted house, you know" The wife said matter of factly. "People probably tell you that all the time. But in our case, it's the truth!" She was right. I am told about other people's ghosts so often that it's become second nature with me to carry a notebook wherever I go. She looked around, making sure she wouldn't be overheard and said softly. "My aunt never had children. When she died last year she left me her house. I thought about selling it, but I love the old house too much for that. So we did a little remodeling and moved in soon as we could. The first night in there we saw my aunt standing by the fireplace and smiling at us. Her husband who'd been silent till then, added. "I thought we were both tired that first night, with moving and everything. But we've seen her standing there in that exact spot nearly every night since we moved in…Not that we're scared or anything. She's there all right! Some friends told us that she may be trying to tell us something about that spot so we've been looking around the fireplace to see if there is any hidden areas." "Or secret doors." The young wife laughed nervously. I agreed that it was very possible the spirit was trying to tell them something. They thanked me politely and wandered off arm in arm, to the buffet table. At least I was one person who didn't think them "strange" A story I've often wondered about is that of the young woman who was driving on an icy road one winter night with her fiancée. Her mother shared this with me a few years ago. "She was a skilled driver, but the road conditions were terrible. She lost control of the car, it skidded across the divide and crashed into the embankment. Her fiancée, who was in the passenger's seat, was killed instantly. I don't have to tell you the tremendous guilt she was left with. For months she just moped around the house barely acknowledging us. Then one morning she got up and put her make-up on. She hadn't done that since the accident. At breakfast table and announced, "Patrick's forgiven me. As a matter of fact, he's here in the house." My husband and I decided there and then that she needed counseling as fast as possible. But much to our amazement she was right. Patrick appeared to me that night and told me not to worry because he was there to help her through this ordeal. "When she no longer needs me, I'll go on." His ghost reassured me.
